my crush on merton

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

A few days ago my husband made me watch one of the endless videos he found on You Tube. This was per usual of him since his day job is producing a clip based television show. Like a good wife, I shrugged my shoulders and said “yes dear, I would love to watch the video.”

Little did I know that this video and the featured man in the video would become my newest sickness. His name was Merton. He wore a grey hoodie and big black glasses, not the most becoming of outfits. However he had mad skills on the piano.

He was funny, beyond funny. I had a crush, a big one.

my most random crush

I stared in awe as Merton interacted with complete strangers. The video ended. My husband left the room. I ran back to the computer and googled ‘Merton’. More videos popped up and I watched, obsessively. The days continued ~ I went to dinner. I talked about Merton. I went to a meeting. I talked about Merton. I told random strangers about Merton. I realized ~ I was sick. I went to the one place where I could shout out my sickness, no one would judge me. I could geek out about everything Merton. I started a Merton obsession group.

pure + simple bliss

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

With a warm breeze swirling ’round the city, I’m looking for any reason to be outdoors – a nap on the grass, stroll by the river, illegal wine toast in public parks…

But my favorite activity, by far, and with great enthusiasm, is hula hooping. I’ve enjoyed the pastime for many years, with varying levels of devotion and purpose.  When I was a child, I hooped to win ice cream cones; now I hoop to the tune of my iPod, or just as an excuse to bask in the sun and enjoy the river views from my sweet little west village neighborhood.

It’s not a new sport, and its history is colorful and vast – apparently Egyptian kids hooped with rings made from reeds a thousand years before the modern era! With the name rooted in reference to Hawaii, the hula hoop hit American pop culture in 1958, and a phenomenon was born.

The hula hoop has been getting some serious traction in the public eye – Michelle Obama hooped to showcase a fun form of exercise; Marisa Tomei hooped to get in shape for a film; and I hoop to soak up the pure + simple bliss of a swirling ring around my waist and soft grass between my toes.

And with that, I’m off into the sun to while away the evening with my sparkled hula hoop.
