for the hostess with the mostess

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

six more days and we are officially ‘back to school’, and here at the markoff group we are making the most of it ~ riding our new bicycles from Bowery Lane Bikes to and from work, popping out for an afternoon ice cream, and overall enjoying the long sunny days while they last.

however, there is no need to shed a tear, fall is sure to be filled with excitement and new inspiration ~ the foliage changing colors, autumn themed dinner parties, the new amsterdam market every sunday starting in september, and my personal favorite ~ spiced apple cider, i just simply adore it, and most of all we are obsessed with our clients new fall products and we think you will agree.

A New Look

Monday, August 30th, 2010

hooray!  i see the september issue and a j.crew catalogue on my kitchen counter, fresh from the mail.  i don’t sit down.  i just stand there at the counter, face in magazine, flipping through the pages.  for a second i’m overwhelmed when i catch a glimpse of vogue’s size in the corner of my eye, i have so many errands i’m supposed to do that day!  but i can’t pull myself away.

as my mouth starts watering, (i don’t know why it does that.)  i make a conscious effort not to drool on myself when i just can’t help whispering “i love that!” to myself.  there are so many fun, chic must-haves.  i yearn for them! …the j.crew bonbon dress, their washed silk shirt dress, and a silk and sequin scoopneck tee- to name a few.  they are super chic, fun, and effortless all bundled up into one glorious ensemble.  well, okay, so i may not be able to pull all these things off, but i’d love to try.

Summer Love

Monday, August 30th, 2010

as september nears, i try to savor my last precious bits of summer.  i soak in the oven-like heat that hits me when i open the door to my black car that had been sitting in the sun all afternoon.  i’ll even miss getting burnt by that little piece of scorching metal on my seatbelt.  i love my summer, and i’m devastated it’s going to end.  the worst part is, i still never got around to doing anything really wild this summer.   but i’m determined not to let it end this way!

i really can’t think of any ridiculously fun adventures off the top of my head, so i google it of course.  let me just say, google never fails; i find some exciting prospects on xperiencedays.com.   i see enticing little pictures of a glider ride in bucks county to a trapeze class to a hang gliding lesson in new york.   i have a flashback to those dreams i have where i’m flying through the air.  i’m excited.  i still have a chance at my last summer thrill.  now, i just wonder, who’s coming with me?!

postmark* blog love…

Friday, August 27th, 2010

Another addition to our favorite blogs beyond the postmark* blog love:

We all know a Tom…an ex, the name after us on the attendance sheet the teacher calls out, the U.S. President (think Jefferson), the boy that lived next door, etc.  But who would have thought TOMS would become the household name for shoes worn by do-gooders, hipsters, NYC fashionistas and impoverished children in third world countries?  You know the concept – purchasing a pair of TOMS shoes and a second pair is given to a child – has hit home, when your mom from Missouri calls to say, “Have you heard of this Tom’s shoes guy?  I was at a conference…He is amazing and single.”

Entering TOMS Blog is a pleasure.  The posts vary from Chelsea the Intern chronicling her work experience with the other TOMS’ staff and tagging it as the “best internship ever,” to photos of Blake, the founder (wait, why isn’t his name Tom?), putting shoes on children’s feet. My favorite posts are re-postings of pictures taken by customers wearing TOMS.  Where have your TOMS taken you recently?

The blog emphasizes the need to eradicate poverty and posts articles highlighting the completion of milestones for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that range from halving extreme poverty by 50 percent by 2015 to increasing gender equality.  TOMS is a socially conscious company using profit, fashion, globalization and capitalism to accomplish a good thing.  This September TOMS will be placing its 1 millionth pair of shoes on a child.  The goal is simple:

In many areas of the world, kids cannot go to school without a pair of shoes. So, if they have a pair, they can attend class.

Join the trend.  This one has already lasted 4.5 years, so I think it’s safe to say TOMS are here to stay.  Most importantly visit this blog to read about people who enjoy their work, share a laugh and are changing lives. After all, New Yorkers know all too well that a good pair of shoes determines one’s outlook on the day and our ability to get from Point A to Point B.
