your bag says everything…

Friday, June 25th, 2010

as most can attest, i simply love handbags. i think they would even go so far to say that i have an obsession with YSL handbags. it has come to the point that i visit the YSL boutique on 57th and 5th and walk out with a new Muse or Roady that i then proceed to hide from my husband, who knows exactly what i am doing, but he humors me anyway. he gives me that look. you know the one?

the look...

i think your bag and the color of your bag speaks to your mood and feelings. it is like a pair of shoes. it ALWAYS fits. and on these hot and humid summer days that counts. most recently, i have departed from my navy blue Roady bag and into a more structure classic dove grey large Muse by YSL. I am loving how subdued and relaxed it makes me feel. i know some may say i am crazy. but it does the trick for me. i look at it and i seem to exhale, my shoulders relax, and my jaw loosens.

yesterday, i had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Jennifer Hassell of Orange and Pear . she has a keen, amazing eye. i am loving everything on her site. so much so that i have departed from my YSL addiction and have purchased a new bag and a new designer. could it be? yes it could! i bought a Flea Bag. it should arrive any day and until then i am filled with nervous anticipation. i just know i will love it. i already have such plans for our new adventures. it will become my traveling companion for my upcoming jaunt to Greece and Turkey, perfect for my Istanbul market purchases.

stay tuned for more updates on the adventures of my new bag, and until then… visit Jennifer’s site and buy one for yourself.

enlightening fixtures

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

I love chandeliers. My interest was sparked by the chandeliers used in every facet of Vosges life – and now I am always on the hunt for beautiful light fixtures.  Lianayar Yaroslavsky creates chandelier tables – a perfect setting for champagne and truffles if there ever were one.

Lindsey Adelman creates voluptuous Bubble Globes. You can see her work featured in Carrie’s “Sex and the City II” apartment.

red velvet cupcake, with bite

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

This is what my cupcake looked like 20 seconds ago; now the wrapper is empty, save for a sprinkle of red crumbs.  As it turns out, most of my day is generally spent thinking about food. I know that most of everyone’s days are spent thinking about food, so I am not alone. But today’s bite of sweet, squishy red velvet cake really caught me off guard.

As is pretty routine, I walked along Crosby Street and passed the Housing Works Bookstore & Cafe.  I decided that I needed another iced coffee for the afternoon, so in I went, ordered my coffee, and noticed the little rows of home-baked goodies from the volunteer-staffed cafe counter. The cupcakes were unquestionably baked in someone’s home oven, and they looked so petite and inviting that I had no choice but to buy one.  And I thought to myself, “Lauren, you’re supporting the arts, you’re supporting the nonprofit bookstore that you love, and you’re inevitably supporting one of those cute little women behind the counter who inevitably baked the cupcakes.”  The red velvet + cream cheese (or is it buttercream?) frosting was a no-brainer decision, and I happily took it to go, swinging my paper bag all the way back to Grand Street.

I returned, tried to save the cupcake til later, failed to resist temptation, and took a big ol’ bite. Well, not that big, but big enough to be really surprised by how extraordinarily delicious a homemade cupcake could be.  Forget the overpriced miniatures at Melissa’s, and overindulged concoctions at the heavily tourist-infested Magnolia – Betty Crocker, Duncan Hines and that giggling Pillsbury Doughboy know what’s best!  I’m a proponent of the slow food movement, and I consume as much locally grown food as I can, but there’s something so indescribably comforting about the taste of cupcakes made from old-school boxed mix.

Now I’m ready for my nap!
